Officials need to be aware
that a game is not necessarily cancelled because it is raining. It is
the duty of a referee to report for an assigned game and assess the field and
weather conditions, then decide whether the game should be played or cancelled
in accordance with LAW 5.
The following procedure is
suggested:
1) Officials MUST go to their
assignments unless informed otherwise by the Referee Assignor.
2) If the referee assignor
cannot be contacted (late evenings/weekends), officials are to make every
effort to determine the field status by contacting the appropriate league
and parks department.
3) If it cannot be determined
whether the field is closed and the game cancelled, the official must go to
the field.
4) If the official has not
been contacted by the Referee Assignor about his/her assignment but has
learned from other sources that the field is closed or the game cancelled,
the official must contact the referee assignor and his/her partners and pass
along the information.
PLEASE NOTE:
1) Parks and Recreation may only be checking
the regional fields with fences surrounding them. These fields can be
closed by locking the gates. Parks and Rec. often make decisions very late
in the day.
2) School field closures may not be under
their jurisdiction. Private fields such as Veneto Centre, Woodbridge and
Highland Park, Aurora are definitely not.
3) Each Municipality has their own Parks and
Recreation departments. Fields in one municipality may be closed while
others stay open.
4) The Leagues are supposed to be keeping
their teams up to date on the status of field closures. You can
contact them for field closure information, however, they may
not always be up to date with Parks and Recreation.
